Professors Heinemann and Lang are partners in the Berlin-area structural genomics project, the Protein Structure Factory and Professor Heinemann leads the MDC Crystallography Group, http://www.mdc-berlin.de/~crystal. Their contribution is derived from this collaborative work which has focused on establishing techniques for the structure analysis of human proteins at elevated throughput. Within the Protein Structure Factory, more than 400 genes encoding human proteins have been expressed in Escherichia coli or yeast to yield soluble protein, more than 100 proteins were purified in milligram quantity and biophysically characterized, and crystal or NMR structures were determined for close to 20 different human proteins.
