The EMBL Hamburg Outstation is headed by Professor Matthias Wilmanns and Dr. Victor Lamzin, and includes eight research groups/teams in crystallography of biological structures, small angle scattering, X-ray absorption spectroscopy and synchrotron instrumentation. The tasks of EMBL-Hamburg are: (A) To provide synchrotron radiation beam lines at the DORIS storage ring at DESY, Hamburg, in structural biology. A proposal to build state-of-the-art beamlines in X-ray crystallography and Small X-ray scattering at the next generation storage ring PETRA, as part of an Integrated Centre for Structural Biology, has been positively evaluated. (B) To provide advanced training courses and training fellowships. (C) To carry out research in structural biology, focusing on technology developments and an integrated approach towards structural biology, taking advantage of the scientific diversity of EMBL. Two world leading software packages, one in automated X-ray structure determination by Dr. Victor Lamzin (ARP/wARP) and a second automated shape interpretation from SAX data by Dr. Dimitri Svergun (ASSA) are from EMBL Hamburg. Recently, EMBL-Hamburg has extended and upgraded its infrastructures for sample production and characterization. A number of innovative developments for heterologous protein expression and new expression vectors has been headed by Dr Arie Geerlof.
